They were on the front porch glider swing and each end table held a pistol and their drinks.

Vicky’s eyes had been closed in peaceful contentment when she heard the sounds of vehicles approach and she felt a flutter of sudden panic.

The two army Humvees entered and separated, and four armed soldiers stood waiting as Tim walked to them.

When he came back she stood and waited for him.

They put their hands on each other’s hips.

“Last chance” he told her.

It was the first words spoken in all the time they had been there together.

“Last chance what?” she asked.

“If you don’t say something, I’m going to kiss those pretty lips of yours.”

She nodded her head.

They kissed, and then kissed more deeply.

“You always were a sweet talker,” she softly told him, and her warm tears were rolling down her cheeks.

“Welcome back to Independence, Idaho.” Vicki Smith told Tim Ballenger.
